Not Easy, but important
I am doing background reading for the readers' theater script that I will write for the Butler Center and its observance of the history of civil rights in Little Rock. I have a huge stack of books to read. Today I am reading Killers of the Dream by Lillian Smith, a writer from Georgia who looks at how the white Southerner came to be so thoroughly committed to segregation. She's an excellent writer, and she is talking from her own experience as well as her family's. It is very helpful, but also tearing for me.
I know that, while this happened in the South, it could have happened anywhere. We all have that potential in our minds and hearts and spirits. What a challenging subject for me to be studying at this point in my life! I don't believe in coincidence; I believe that the things that come into our lives happen for a purpose. This study is helping me to process my feelings of sadness; not easy, but important.
Today has been a rainy day, hovering in the mid 30s, sometimes icy. I have talked to one person on the phone, and she was busy and distracted and didn't have time to just talk. I have been alone in the house on a gloomy day, studying a distressing subject, and missing David - but there have been bright spots.
I found out that you can cook regular rice in the microwave, and it turns out good! I found I had enough ingredients to make a tasty Spanish rice. I rearranged the living room so that I can see the TV from the dining table. And I just heard a funky song called "There was glue in the water bed the night I got stuck with you"!
